Team Anderson chasing new horizon with Bunge Championship berth

Date:

A new challenger has thrown its hat into the ring for the provincial men’s curling title.

Team Derrick Anderson, the 2025 Curling Club Men’s Provincial Champions, dominated their zone championships with a 3-0 run last week in Beausejour to win the tournament.

With the victory, Team Anderson qualified for the 2026 Bunge Men’s Provincial Championship (formerly the Viterra Championship).

“It’s a big step competitively,” said skip Derrick Anderson. “None of us play too many competitive spiels, so we kind of just decided we’d give zones a try, see if we could have some good games and hopefully win.”

The Bunge Championship will be a new experience for Anderson and his Gimli rink, with Anderson and Chris Sigurdson set to make their tournament debuts, while teammates Justin Hoplock and Wade Ford have both competed at the event in prior years.

It will also represent a significant jump in competition, with the squad set to face some of the top curlers in the province.

Anderson and his team, however, are embracing the challenge.

“I feel we have a chance to play well and maybe get a few wins,” Anderson said. “But those top teams in Manitoba — the ones playing consistently and some of the Grand Slam guys like Reid Carruthers, Jordon McDonald and Braden Calvert — those guys were on the Olympic chase this year. It’ll be really cool to play against them and see how that goes.”

The Bunge Men’s Provincial Championship will run Feb. 3–8, 2026, at Selkirk Recreation Complex.

The winning team will earn the right to represent Manitoba at the 2026 Montana’s Brier, scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 8 in St. John’s, N.L.
