Winnipeg Beach man arrested after police pursuit

Date:

A 39-year-old Winnipeg Beach man is in custody after a vehicle fled from officers across multiple jurisdictions late last week.

Just before midnight on Dec. 4, Selkirk RCMP were advised by Manitoba First Nations Police Service that they had attempted to stop a grey vehicle near Brokenhead First Nation, but the driver failed to stop.

A short time later, Selkirk RCMP members observed the same vehicle travelling westbound on Clandeboye Road at a high rate of speed. Police say the driver failed to stop at the intersection of Highway 9 and Clandeboye Road, prompting officers to request support from the Gimli and Fisher Branch detachments to help safely intercept the vehicle. It was last seen west of Highway 7.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., Gimli RCMP deployed a tire deflation device near Highway 7 and Provincial Road 231. The vehicle came to rest in the north ditch and the lone male occupant fled on foot into a wooded area.

Officers from Selkirk, Gimli and Fisher Branch RCMP, with assistance from two remote piloted aircraft systems (drones) and police service dog Stewie, located and arrested the suspect shortly after 2:25 a.m.

Aaron Piech, 39, has been charged and remanded into custody for possession of ammunition contrary to order, resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police and operating a vehicle while prohibited.

Police say Piech also had two outstanding warrants for theft under $5,000, impaired operation, operation while prohibited and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. In addition, he was issued provincial offence notices for driving while disqualified, unlawfully transporting liquor in a motor vehicle and possession of fewer than 25 units of unmarked tobacco.
