Interlake students learn lesson from the land

Evergreen school division students took to the frozen surface of Lake Winnipeg last week for a day of traditional Indigenous teachings and ice fishing.

The group, which included Grades 5 through 8 Winnipeg Beach School and Arborg Early-Middle School students went to Gimli’s South Beach on March 11.

Accompanied by teachers Kristen Rudyk and Amber Lawrence, the students began their field trip with an optional sage smudging ceremony, followed by a traditional land offering of tobacco.

The beautiful, sunny day was made complete with fish caught from Rudky.

The students left with an interest in ice fishing and an increased appreciation of how to live respectfully with the land.
