Fishermen earn road split in pair of nail-biters

Date:

The Selkirk Fishermen earned a split from a pair of road games last weekend in St. Malo and La Broquerie.

After nearly two weeks between games, Selkirk wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in Friday’s matchup against the St. Malo Warriors. Ryland Schroeder opened the scoring midway through the first period.

St. Malo answered later in the frame to send the game into the first intermission tied 1-1.

Sage Courchene restored Selkirk’s lead with a shorthanded goal in the second period before the Warriors once again pulled even. A scoreless third period pushed the game into overtime, where Ayden Spence scored the winner to lift St. Malo to a 3-2 victory.

The teams finished tied with 27 shots apiece. Logan Mazinke earned the win for St. Malo, while Johnny Enns-Demchuk took the overtime loss for Selkirk, securing a single point for the Fishermen.

Selkirk bounced back Saturday night with a 3-2 regulation win over the La Broquerie Habs, again with Enns-Demchuk getting the start.

The Habs held a 2-0 lead after the first period before Ashton Schroeder sparked the comeback, scoring midway through the second. Ryan Cromie tied the game on the power play later in the frame.

The game remained knotted at 2-2 into the third period before Izzy Aime scored the go-ahead goal at 9:39 to give Selkirk the lead for good.

Enns-Demchuk was perfect in the third period, finishing with 27 saves. La Broquerie goaltender Jaxon Loewen stopped 34 shots in the loss as Selkirk outshot the Habs 37-29.

With the win, the Fishermen moved three points ahead of La Broquerie and sit third in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League standings with a 14-5-0-0-2 record through 21 games.

Selkirk trails only St. Malo (48 points) and Beausejour (54) and holds games in hand on both clubs.

The Fishermen face a busy three-game week, with matchups against North Winnipeg, La Broquerie and Lundar from Tuesday through Sunday. Friday night’s game against the Habs will be played at Sagkeeng Arena Complex and will count as a home game for Selkirk.

Friday, Jan. 30 vs. La Broquerie Habs, 8 p.m., Sagkeeng Arena Complex
