JV Royals crowned KPAC champs, Varsity comes close

It was championship week around KPAC with the Lord Selkirk Royals fighting for titles across both Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys levels.

The JV Boys went first as they took on Maples on Thursday evening at River East Collegiate to cap off a perfect season with a championship.

After splitting the opening two sets, the Royals strong play became too much for Maples in sets three and four.

They went on to close out the game three sets to one (25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20) to claim the JV Boys KPAC title and complete the undefeated regular season and playoff run.

Already the champs, the boys will attempt to win one more piece of hardware at provincials this week.

They will compete for quarterfinal seeding in Pool 1 alongside the Steinbach Regional Sabres, J.H. Bruns Broncos, and Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys Rouge all throughout Thursday at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute.

The Provincial AAAA JV Volleyball Championship wraps up Monday, Nov. 24 with the championship game at 8 p.m. from Technical Vocational High School.

The Royals Varsity Boys Volleyball Team will also head off for regionals this week, they however will be attending as a wildcard team after falling to the River East Kodiaks in the Varsity Boys KPAC final on Friday at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute.

Selkirk led two sets to one and were looking to close things out in the fourth set.

River East however battled to a 39-37 victory in the fourth which forced a winner take all fifth set.

In another thrilling set, River East scraped out a 15-13 victory to claim the championship, 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 37-39, 13-15) the final.

The two teams could possibly meet again, as both will be competing at Boston Pizza Provincial AAAA Volleyball Regionals from Thursday, Nov. 20-Saturday, Nov. 22 at Vincent Massey High School in Brandon.

The Royals first round opponent is still to be determined however they will enter as the eighth seed playing against the ninth seed on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The winner will move on to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Royals JV Girls Volleyball Team will also continue their season with Provincial AAAA JV Volleyball Championships from Nov. 20-24.

They qualified as a wildcard team and will compete in Pool 2 alongside the River East Kodiaks, Steinbach Regional Sabres, and St. Mary’s Flames on opening day.

All Pool 2 games will be played at Grant Park High School with each team guaranteed a spot in the playoff round.
