Struck down: Selkirk season ends on penalty kicks

Date:

The offseason has come early for the Selkirk Strikeforce.

Selkirk faced off against WSP FC in the first round of the Manitoba Major Soccer League Division 3B playoffs on Thursday at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, with the winner advancing to the semifinals.

The Strikeforce entered as the fourth-ranked club, while WSP came in fifth following a strong finish to the regular season.

As expected, both clubs delivered a back-and-forth match. Selkirk got a pair of goals from Devin Racicot to keep things tied at two.

But with the score still even after regulation and extra time, the match went to penalty kicks, where Selkirk’s season came to an end as WSP prevailed 3-2.

WSP advances to face Maples FC in the semifinals, while Selkirk now looks ahead to the winter following a summer in which they dominated much of their schedule.

The Strikeforce had the hottest start of any Div. 3B club back in May, and that momentum carried through most of the season. They finish the summer with a 10-7-3 record, excluding the playoff loss.

Elsewhere in the league, TDS were also eliminated on Thursday, falling to Thunder FC during the same time slot at Ralph Cantafio. Thunder will now take on the Hanover Strikers in the first semifinal on Tuesday, while WSP FC and Maples FC meet in the second semifinal later that evening.
