Final Wes Killbery slo-pitch tournament raises $7,000 for CancerCare

Date:

The third annual Wes Killbery slo-pitch tournament drew players and fans to Balmoral on Sept. 13 for a day of competition and community spirit in honour of Wes Killbery, who died in April 2023 after a six-month battle with cancer.

A passionate community advocate, Killbery is remembered each year through the event, which featured beer gardens, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and a home-run derby. Ten teams competed in this year’s tournament, which raised $7,000 in a single day.

Emily Spruyt won the junior derby, while Ashley Wicklund and Kyle Lundale claimed the women’s and men’s titles. On the diamond, the Killerbees edged Sticky Mitts 10-9 in the final.

Over three years, organizers have hosted tournaments that raised more than $35,000 in support of CancerCare. Although this year marked the final slo-pitch event, organizers say they plan to continue honouring Killbery annually through other fundraising initiatives.
