Hearts of gold, helping those living on the streets

Date:

For the past couple years, a pair of kind-hearted Teulon friends has been helping the less fortunate living on city streets — and they’re once again spreading warmth to others on these chilly days.

Lois Proulx and Patty Kowalchuk routinely fill their vehicles with donated clothing, sandwiches, snacks and personal care items. Then they drive to downtown Winnipeg, park their vehicle and begin to hand out items to those in need.

Many other Teulon residents and businesses contribute to the cause, including Blue Skies Bakery. Friends, family members and folks from nearby towns also offer support.

The women say the people they meet on the streets are very grateful.

“They all have a story to why they live on the streets. It’s not only people doing drugs; it’s people that the system failed (slipped thru the cracks),” Proulx recently wrote on her Facebook page.

“Nothing happens overnight. It’s a waiting game. And hopefully you find a place to stay or are dressed warm enough to survive the night. We do this from our hearts and we appreciate everything you give us to hand out.”

Proulx and Kowalchuk are always on the lookout for donations. Items in demand include hoodies, jeans, mittens, toques, jackets, ski pants, clothing to layer, socks, boots and other footwear. Other useful items are peanut butter for sandwiches, water, blankets, sleeping bags, personal hygiene items and treats.

Nancy Hein (Kowalchuk’s daughter) and Jennifer Hay (Proulx’s daughter) both expressed pride in their moms’ compassionate actions.

“Our moms have always had a passion to help people in need — from working as health-care aides, home care, EMS, volunteering in the community and more,” Hein said.

Likewise, Hay shared similar sentiments about the women’s selfless project.

“They inspire many to be kind and to help others,” she said. “We’re proud of them.”

If you have items you want to donate, please email loisjune40@hotmail.com, text or call 204-886-2655, or reach out to Lois Proulx or Patty Kowalchuk on Facebook.
