Jets dominant in home-opener thumping of Raiders

Date:

The Stonewall Jets will take an even .500 record into Week 2 of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League season.

Last week, the Jets opened their 2025–26 campaign with a pair of games against the Raiders Jr. Hockey Club and the Transcona Railer Express, earning one win and one loss.

Veterans Memorial Sports Complex was the site of the Jets’ home opener on Thursday night, where they dominated in front of the hometown crowd with a 6–0 victory over the Raiders.

A three-goal first period — with tallies from Mason Bernier, Cohen Cheung and Peyton Bateman — set the tone early. Brody Stovin and Rylan Slatcher kept the offence rolling in the second, each adding a goal to extend the lead to 5–0 through two periods. Kai Smith capped off the night with a third-period marker to seal the shutout win.

Goaltender Spencer Hunnam, making his season debut, collected his first shutout of the campaign by stopping all 30 shots he faced to earn first-star honours. Slatcher and Stovin rounded out the three-star selections.

Sunday afternoon was a different story defensively for the Jets, who travelled to Transcona for their first away game against the Railer Express.

The Railers kept Hunnam busy early, outshooting the Jets 13–8 in the opening frame. Both clubs converted on some of their chances, with Karson King and Gavin Holod scoring for Stonewall, while Transcona responded with two of their own.

The second period saw the Railers take control with a late surge, jumping ahead 6–2 after 40 minutes. Alex Kaczorowski and Adam Newcombe provided third-period goals to spark a brief comeback attempt, but Transcona matched the output as the game ended 8–4 in favour of the Railers.

With Week 1 in the books, the Jets sit at 1–1–0, placing them in the middle of the MMJHL standings. Week 2 will be a lighter schedule with just one game on Thursday, followed by the weekend off.

The Jets will welcome the reigning champion St. Boniface Riels to Stonewall for their first meeting of the season. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex.
