The Stonewall Rams boys hockey team battled hard to even the score with the J.H. Bruns Broncos on Friday during their first week of Winnipeg High School Hockey League action.
Earlier in the week, the Rams fell 7–6 in overtime to the Broncos. Matthew Hawryluk scored twice for Stonewall, while Alec Harrisko, Daniel Halleux, Chase Corbett and Liam Cox also netted their first goals of the season.
The overtime loss earned the Rams a single point in the standings, but they were still in search of their first win heading into Friday’s rematch — which also served as their home opener.
Playing at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, the Rams went down early and didn’t tie the game until the third period when Cox scored to make it 1–1. After the Broncos regained the lead moments later, Banx Chartrand answered back with five minutes left to force overtime.
Goaltender Tyler Loehmer stood tall for Stonewall, making 26 saves to push the game to a shootout — where he came up big again to secure the Rams’ first win of the season, a 3–2 victory over J.H. Bruns.
The win earned Stonewall two points and levelled the season series between the two teams.
The Rams continue Winnipeg Free Press Division play Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. against CLR at Notre Dame Arena, and Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. when they host CPET at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex.
