Thunder defence dominates as Interlake stays unbeaten

Date:

The Interlake Thunder defence delivered a statement performance in Week 4, leading the way in a decisive 43-13 victory over the Dauphin Clippers in Rural Manitoba Football League action Sunday afternoon at Stonewall Collegiate Field.

Quarterback Jesse Batenchuk once again steered the offence, surpassing 200 passing yards for the fourth straight week. He went 14-for-21 for 280 yards and connected with AJ Nadon for a touchdown as the Thunder scored early and often to remain undefeated at 4-0.

But it was the defensive unit that stole the spotlight. Head coach Christof Hasselfield praised seniors Jakob Samborski and Cooper Ponton for setting the tone up front, while Grade 11 defensive back Mark Stroppa anchored the secondary with an interception and several key tackles.

“It was a monster game from our defence as an entire unit,” said Hasselfield. “I know there was 13 on the scoreboard, but they only scored on a punt return and a bobbled snap that they picked up and ran back. For all intents and purposes, the defence pitched a shutout. They might have held them to three first downs all game, so kudos to them because Dauphin is historically one of the more physical teams. I was really proud of the guys for stepping up.”

The Thunder did lose senior receiver Jamie Dandeneau to injury during the game after a 70-yard receiving performance, but Hasselfield expects him back for Week 5 against Falcons Football Club.

“I don’t think confidence is our problem at this point,” he said. “Guys are really believing in the system. If anything, we’re getting away with some sloppy play when it comes to turnovers. The biggest thing is going to be staying focused because, like I’ve said since the beginning of the year, I think we’re the most talented team in the league and I stand behind that.”

Interlake will look to stay perfect when they visit the Falcons in Winnipeg on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon.
