Woodlands to host ground breaking ceremony on Oct. 4

Date:

The Rural Municipality of Woodlands has begun laying the groundwork for its highly anticipated 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial, in 2030. To mark the occasion, residents and municipal members have formed a committee to develop a park along the abandoned rail line between the municipal office and PTH 6, reflecting the community’s history and landscape.

On Friday, Oct. 4, Park150 will officially break ground on this milestone project. The event program will commence at 1:30 p.m. at the Woodlands Community Hall. A sod turning and tree planting will take place across from the Municipal Office at 3 p.m. The municipality welcomes the community at large to celebrate this historic event.

The groundbreaking ceremony will include performances by Woodlands School, Woodlands Childcare and fiddle player Charlize Huard.

Dignitaries scheduled to give an address include the former Governor General and former Premier, the Right Honourable Edward Schreyer, the former Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Yvon Dumont, the former Premier, Mr. Greg Selinger, and the former Member for the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Ralph Eichler. Also in attendance will be the current MLA for Lakeside, Mr. Trevor King, and the Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Woodlands, Mr. Doug Oliver.

Park150 is a unique initiative in Canada. It features trees planted by all levels of government and community volunteers, a tall grass prairie, pollinator garden, recreation pad, and a walking path leading to the local historical museum. Park150 will be designed by Scatliff + Miller + Murray and officially open during the 150th celebration weekend in July 2030.

To celebrate the municipality’s history, further tree plantings recognizing living former dignitaries, volunteers, and organizations will occur over the next five years. As design details come together, a community engagement session is being planned for the winter.
