Warren Curling Club to host funspiel and social for 100th anniversary

Date:

Warren Curling Club (WCC) is set to hit the century mark on Nov. 12.

This year, WCC turns 100 years old after opening its doors in 1924.

To celebrate, the club is hosting a 4-end funspiel, along with a dinner and social on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at the club.

The funspiel is a three-game minimum, double-elimination format with champions to be crowned at the end.

The event will also feature live music performances from local groups, prizes for the best radically dressed teams, and a chance to draw the button for money prizes.

The guests speaking at the event are MLA for Lakeside, Trevor King, and a representative from CurlManitoba, who will be announced later.

Members of the funspiel committee are still planning parts of the event, but chair of the committee and WCC member Ryan Duncan said the celebration is their way of giving back to the club for the years of fun curling experiences and friendships made while also being a welcomed excuse to hold a fun community curling event.

“This community is amazing; we still have the small-town feel,” said Duncan. “It filters right back to the curling club. A lot of people here are very fun and friendly so we joined the board five years ago to try to help out because we enjoy people enjoying themselves. We’re all volunteers, we still have a good handful here that work very hard every year. We just wanted to give back to the community. Warren is very much a hockey town and then the other winter sport is us. We’re trying to rebuild our identity in the community as another place where you can come out and have recreation and a real social life.”

To register for the event, call or text Nadine at 204-383-0836.

The event costs $80 per curling team and $20 individually for non-curlers.

The committee is also looking for sponsors for the event. For sponsorship options, contact Melissa Duncan at 204-391-4899.
