The provincial government announced last week a $585 million investment in 24 infrastructure projects for the 2026 construction season, and is reminding motorists to slow down and follow all signage posted in construction zones.
Transportation and infrastructure minister Lisa Naylor said the improvements will make a difference for motorists and commercial haulers.
“Our government is investing in infrastructure that makes a real difference in people’s daily lives,” said Naylor in a June 23 news release. “Whether it’s getting to work, moving goods to market or travelling between regions, these projects support the communities that rely on these routes every day. By improving road conditions, adding passing lanes and strengthening connections, we’re making travel safer and more reliable while supporting local economies and keeping Manitobans connected.”
The government’s projects include highway improvements in the Interlake.
In addition to the construction of a series of passing lanes on Highway 8 between Stonewall and Gimli, the province is upgrading PR 227.
A major stretch of the gravel highway – which runs south of Lake Manitoba from Highway 6 at Warren to Highway 16 in the west – will be restored.
Fifty-nine kilometres of 227 will see gravel restoration between PR 248 at Meadow Lea in the RM of Woodlands and Highway 16.
Motorists and commercial vehicles would get stuck on portions of PR 227 in wet conditions that turned the road muddy.
