Cobras clinch provincial berth after strong varsity girls volleyball qualifier

Date:

The Elm Creek Cobras varsity girls volleyball team is headed to the provincial championship after a solid performance at the Provincial Round 1 Qualifier held Nov. 15, where they finished second behind the Morweena Raptors.

Morweena topped the round robin with three straight wins to secure the first automatic berth. The Cobras also earned a spot at provincials after placing second in the round robin and winning a tight playoff match to claim the final qualifier position. All matches followed a best-of-three format with a two-point advantage required to take each set.

Elm Creek opened its day with a commanding 25-13, 25-14 win over the Dufferin Christian Stingers. The Cobras then continued their momentum by defeating the Real-Berard Jaguars 25-21, 25-11. In their third round-robin matchup, Elm Creek pushed the undefeated Morweena squad but fell 25-12, 27-25.

That set up a playoff rematch between Elm Creek and Real-Berard for the second provincial berth. The Cobras delivered in straight sets, earning a 25-18, 25-23 victory to punch their ticket to the championship weekend.

On the Morweena side, the Raptors varsity girls volleyball team was dominant throughout the day. They opened with a 25-8, 25-20 win over Real-Berard, added a 25-16, 25-21 win against Dufferin Christian, and capped the round robin with a 25-12, 27-25 win against Elm Creek to finish undefeated.

Dufferin Christian dropped all three of its matches.

Rivers Collegiate will host the varsity girls volleyball Provincial Championship from Nov. 27–29 at Brandon University. Teams set to compete include the Morweena Raptors, Ste. Rose Celtics, Reston Tigers, Gilbert Plains Trojans, Rivers Rams, Grand Rapids Wolverines, Elm Creek Cobras, Hamiota Huskies, Miami Marlins and Wawanesa Warriors.
