New reading nook completed at Boyne Regional Library

Date:

The Boyne Regional Library in Carman would like to thank the Carman Area Foundation for funding a new reading nook in the Children’s Library and a projector and screen to enhance its library programs.

The reading nook features a custom-made cabinet bench and a spacious storage unit for children’s program items. On top is a custom wipeable cushion and throw pillows, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A beautiful watercolour mural was installed on the walls to complete the space. The nook has great lighting and is an outlet for eBook use.

This new alcove is perfect for one person or a small group and provides a safe, comfortable place to read.

“Since its installation, many children have enjoyed the nook, reading books on their own or with their family, making it a beloved spot in the library,” said Lynsey Hannah of the Boyne Regional Library. “We continuously hear positive feedback from children on how much they enjoy the space.”

The Carman Area Foundation has also funded a portable projector, an adjustable stand, and a large portable screen for library programs. This has allowed the library to confirm two Creative Connection events in the coming months, which will make great use of this projector.

On Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the library, Dr. Maureen Matthews and local resident Elaine Owen will discuss the remarkable story behind their new stunning large-format coffee table book. In 1995, Dr. Matthews made a promise to the respected Anishinaabe elder Charlie George Owen that she would photograph the objects in the Pauingassi collection and make a book so that the children in the community would know about the lives and accomplishments of their ancestors.

Wanting to help with the promise to Elaine Owen’s grandfather-in-law, Elaine and Joshua (Graysville residents) supported and assisted Dr. Matthews, who has worked for nearly 30 years on this project. Now, the book has finally been published.

On Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., Katherena Vermette will join the library virtually for an online reading and talk about her newest novel, “Real Ones,” as well as her current works.

The Boyne Regional Library’s website has all the information on these free-to-attend Creative Connection events: boyneregionallibrary.com
