Gimli showed its pride last weekend as hundreds of people took part in the town’s 2026 pride event to recognize and celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
The three-day celebration was a collaboration with the community, along with sponsors such as the municipality and local businesses, and it stood as a declaration that they stand up for diversity and value inclusiveness.
The opening ceremonies included raising the pride flag over Gimli Beach. The Pride March on Sunday drew hundreds of participants. Accompanied by the FAF Marching Band, people walked from the bandstand to Gimli Park, where they mingled, enjoyed cupcakes and took part in crafts and other activities.
The weekend included musical entertainment, a movie night in conjunction with the Gimli International Film Festival and the New Iceland Heritage Museum, a queer comedy night, the lighting of the Viking statue in rainbow colours, a vendors’ market and a women’s dance party and social.
