St. Laurent hockey fans spent the day honouring their local hero, Laurent “Mad Dog” Kerbrat, at the Mad Dog Cup on March 15.
This premier tournament featured four recreational hockey teams, who spent the day cherishing Kerbrat’s dedication to the sport.
“We have had these tournaments in the past with barely any meaning to them, so why not make one in honour of Laurent Kerbrat and all he has contributed to our arena and community,” said Rebels Hockey president Jordan Allard, who organized the tournament as he wanted to hold a worthwhile event.
The tournament was held at the Laurent Kerbrat Arena, which was renamed the St. Laurent Arena after Kerbrat’s passing in 2020.
Allard was inspired by his contributions to the world of sports and wanted to find a way to repay his efforts.
“It is important to honour Laurent because he basically committed his life to our arena.”
More than 75 spectators attended to watch the four teams compete. The Expendables emerged victorious, winning the championship game 3-1 and completing the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
Despite being a smaller tournament this year, it attracted a lively crowd.
“Our viewing area was packed, and we had spectators there right from the start of the first game, with more people coming as the day went on.”Allard hopes more teams will register next year to hold a bigger tournament.
The Mad Dog Cup also served as a small fundraiser for the St. Laurent Sports Club. Local volunteers operated the canteen, selling delicious game-day snacks. While proceeds are still being calculated, the canteen sales were a success. The club plans to use the funds for minor hockey in St. Laurent, arena maintenance, and purchasing sports equipment.
