Lightning shut out in back-to-back losses to open season

Date:

The Interlake Lightning are still searching for their first win of the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League season after being blanked in both games of their opening weekend.

Interlake kicked off the 2025-26 campaign with a tough 5-0 loss to the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. After a scoreless first period, Braya Kapusta broke the deadlock midway through the second at 12:49, and Cali Lavallee followed with a pair of power-play goals less than a minute apart to give Winnipeg a commanding 3-0 lead. The Avros sealed the victory in the final frame with goals from Lexington Green and Jenna Turner.

Lightning goaltender Joslyn Tetlock faced relentless pressure, turning aside 42 of 47 shots, while Interlake managed just 13 shots on Avros netminder Anya Kauenhowen, who earned the shutout.

The following afternoon, the Lightning showed more push but were again unable to find the back of the net, falling 2-0 to the Yellowhead Chiefs. Casey George scored the eventual game-winner late in the first period, while Presley Hodson added an insurance marker just 1:06 into the third.

Interlake goaltender Eleanor Sugimoto turned aside 19 shots in the loss as the Chiefs held a 21-18 edge in shots. Kylie Hack posted an 18-save shutout for Yellowhead.

With the pair of defeats, the Lightning (0-2-0) will look to regroup ahead of their next league matchup on Oct. 4, when they host the Westman Wildcats at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex.
