National Nursing Week from May 12 to 18
What would Julie Kumps do?
Melissa Campbell often asks herself this question when facing a difficult nursing situation or breaching a difficult topic with a patient.
Both registered nurses, Kumps and Campbell work together at Gimli’s hospital.
“Julie Kumps is in inspiration to all who comes into contact with her in the chemo unit at Gimli Hospital. Her care and concern go far beyond full-time hours that she has maintained for the past 40-plus years,” Campbell said.
“She is so compassionate, gentle and personable to all the patients under her care. She is genuinely invested in advocating for the best course of individual care, unique to each patient.”
Kumps is able to have difficult conversations with patients with ease and compassion, while also assisting patients and their families with navigating the intricacies of their personal cancer journey.
“She is a source of information and assists other staff readily with her vast knowledge. She is always willing to assist in any way and always with a smile on her face,” Campbell said.
“She is dedicated, hard-working and a source of inspiration to other co-workers.”
At the same time, Kumps said she feels grateful and humbled by Campbell’s kind comments.
“Melissa and all of my co-workers really contribute to the daily enjoyment of my job,” she said.
“I have worked at the Gimli Community Health Centre in the chemotherapy department, in the ER and on the ward for the past 45 years and do not view this as a job but as a wonderful way to serve my community.”
