New sign in Roseisle marks centennial bridge replacement and honours local history

Date:

A new sign commemorating the replacement of a century-old bridge now greets visitors entering Roseisle from Highway 245.

Erected in 2023, the new bridge replaced the original structure built in July 1923. To mark the occasion, a commemorative sign was recently installed at the northwest corner of the Rose Garden, beside the sidewalk leading to the public washroom and skating rink.

The new addition is just one of several historical landmarks found along Roseisle’s Main Avenue—an area that some locals say should be renamed “Memory Lane.”

At the east end stands the Roseisle School Monument, followed by a large metal rose sculpture accompanied by a plaque explaining the origins of the community’s name. This is located in the Memorial Rose Garden, which includes a section honouring local soldiers who lost their lives in wartime, as well as roses planted in memory of former residents.

Further west, the Roseisle War Memorial lists the names of soldiers from the district who served in the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Korean War.

The Roseisle Community Co-op opened in 2005,  replacing  a store that had been built in 1903 on the other side of the street.

Across from it, the Roseisle Park features a commemorative stone with mounted plaques, a children’s playground, and a ball diamond—additions that reflect the evolving needs of the community.

Just a block north of Main Avenue, on the corner of 1st Street and 2nd Avenue, another monument marks the site of the former Roseisle United Church.

Together, these markers create a walkable timeline of Roseisle’s past, offering visitors a chance to reflect on the village’s rich heritage.

So next time you’re passing through, take a few minutes to leave the highway—and take a walk down Memory Lane.
