An array of Lake Winnipeg conservation advocates gathered along the shores in Dunnottar on Aug. 24 for the Lake Winnipeg Foundation’s (LWF) Walk for Water.
The LWF – an organization committed to protecting the lake’s water quality – was founded 20 years ago and returned to its home community of Dunnottar for an anniversary Walk for Water. The fundraising event brought in $12,400 for the foundation and its science-based efforts to reduce phosphorus levels in the lake.
“The energy of the day was vibrant,” said Mackenzie Nicolle, LWF membership and events co-ordinator. “People were really excited that the event had returned. We had many locals who volunteered to help us set up the day before and the morning of, and they all had smiles on their faces. There were also several children and dogs who brought cheerful energy to the whole day.”
Participants followed a four-kilometre route along Lake Winnipeg, stopping at information stations hosted by event partners and volunteers. For Nicolle, a highlight of the day was the near-perfect weather.
“After a summer of intense smoke and surprising thundershowers, having a clear and sunny morning felt like a rare blessing,” she said.
Bruce Smith and Rick Gamble, LWF founders, welcomed participants and sent them off on their walk, thanking them for their commitment to protecting the lake’s waters. Walkers wrapped up their adventure with birthday cupcakes from Julia’s Place, followed by raffle prize announcements.
“One kid won two of the prizes, and his smile was radiant. He was just so proud of himself,” Nicolle added.
She thanked everyone who made Dunnottar’s Walk for Water an outstanding success, including event sponsor Johnston Group, the volunteers, donors, walkers and the small but mighty committee members.
“I think the people in Dunnottar and the surrounding area really love Lake Winnipeg, and this kind of walk both allows community members to enjoy a beautiful day and contribute to an effort they believe in,” Nicolle said. “I heard from many people at the walk that they are happy the event returned, and I would love to see the energy continue to grow in future years.”
