Don’t miss out on this event supporting Knox Presbyterian Church
Bringing music to a community isn’t something new for our area’s churches, but this year Knox Presbyterian Church is welcoming the band Those Guys to Selkirk on Oct. 2 for a concert and dessert event.
“We want to be more visible and offer things to the community. And last year, the concert was a huge success. It drew people from, not just Selkirk, but the surrounding area. People in Stonewall came, and so, we wanted to continue to offer something like that to the community again,” said Jean Oliver, who is part of the event’s planning committee.
Those Guys are a 9-member vocal ensemble from Winnipeg. They have been together since 2009 and sing in genres such as classic rock, pop, R&B, Broadway, and more. Their website says, “Whether you’re a fan of Billy Joel or Bruno Mars, the Beatles or Beyoncé, Those Guys have something for everyone.”
People interested in local music will also likely be interested in this group, as Kieran Moolchan grew up in Selkirk and Dane Bjornson grew up in Gimli.
The members of Knox Church’s concert planning committee learned about Those Guys last winter.
“We heard about a concert that they were having in Winnipeg just before Christmas. And a group of us, including Jean and two others, went to see them, and they were very good,” said Nicolette Briscoe-Sterling, who is also part of the event’s planning committee.
“I never said a word until we got in the car, and said to the other three, ‘So what do you think?’ And every one of them said, ‘Let’s do it!’,” said Oliver.
The fundraiser is a general fundraiser that supports the church’s programming. The church is preparing for a pretty big celebration as they are hitting their 150th anniversary in the community next year.
Though they already get funding for it, the church also helps the Selkirk community by doing a once-monthly soup kitchen on the third Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Memorial Hall. This helps as Selkirk’s Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen operates on weekdays, allowing both groups to help residents in need without duplicating services.
Both the concert and the soup kitchen are about reaching out to our community, which is something that the people of Knox Church feel is important.
“That’s what the church is for. The church exists for the sake of the community to meet needs, spiritually primarily, social needs, physiological needs, and especially in a context like this, where some people might not have a need for a soup kitchen, but they have a need for companionship. Loneliness is a major issue in communities such as these, and we just want to make sure that everybody knows that there’s a place where there are listening ears, and there’s a place of welcome, and that the church is here to serve. We serve the Lord by serving each other and serving the community,” said the church’s minister, Naggie Sterling.
This concert will take place on Oct. 2, starting at 7 p.m. at the Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School Theatre. Tickets are $35. The concert will take place first, and there will be a short intermission when residents will be invited to the cafeteria for cake, coffee and socializing.
“I think (the people who come will) be thoroughly entertained. Last year, it was just a great buzz of community, people you hadn’t seen all year, or people who came from other places, felt very welcome. And so, I think it’s going to be another evening of fellowship within the community, as well as great entertainment,” said Oliver.
