Smitty’s marking down innovation and style during 4-day Black Friday event

Date:

Arborg’s Smitty’s Furniture & Appliances is about to deliver innovation, quality and style at discounted rates for its upcoming four-day Black Friday sales event.

Everything in the store will be discounted for the highly anticipated yearly sale, which attracts hundreds of people from across the Interlake.

Smitty’s not only carries a wide selection of brand-name furniture, but it’s also the exclusive and one-and-only showroom for Strictly Amish furniture, which Smitty’s owners Larry and Darlene Kornelsen used to showcase in the city but moved up to Arborg in 2020 after they bought Smitty’s.

Store manager Rene Sutyla, who has been with Smitty’s for over 27 years, said customers will see discounts on power-reclining chairs priced as low as $697, sofas starting off as low as $597 and mattresses as low as $399.

“We’re discounting everything in the store. On all furniture, there’s a minimum of 10 per cent off all the way up to 40 per cent off,” said Sutyla. “And there are Black Friday discounts on all appliances.”

Last year’s sale had a really good turnout, he said, and this year they’re increasing the number of invitations (8,000) that they send out to previous customers throughout the Interlake, including communities such as Teulon, Lundar, Oak Point, Gypsumville, Hecla, Pine Dock, Matheson Island, Winnipeg Beach, Gimli, Selkirk, Peguis and Fisher River, as well as customers from Winnipeg.

“We have a very large trading area. People like our central location in Arborg and we don’t have commissioned sales staff. Our success comes down to our sales staff, Kathy Melsted and Jamie Kornelsen, who are definite assets to the business, to our top-notch delivery staff, Dana Borgfjord and Zac Kornelsen, and to our bookkeeper and administrative person, Lorna Friesen, who is a friendly voice on the phone,” said Sutyla. “Smitty’s also offers competitive prices on a daily basis, and this Black Friday sale allows us to pass on additional savings from our suppliers.”

Some pricing on furniture and appliances is decreasing compared to what it was during the pandemic, but there are some items that have higher price points because of innovations built into newer models, he said. Some of those newer innovations can be found in appliances such as ranges and fridges and in furniture including sofas.

“One of the newest features we have right now is on Frigidaire Gallery ranges that have 15 different ways to cook in your oven. Your oven can be used as a food dehydrator or a slow cooker. You can air fry a whole tray, use steam bake or convection – it’s absolutely amazing what you can do with your oven now. You can get rid of all your countertop appliances,” said Sutyla.

Induction cooktops, which generate a magnetic field that excites metal in pans, are increasing in demand with their ability to boil water in under 90 seconds, he said. Although they’ve been around for some time, they’re now coming down in price. And in French-door fridges, one can now find a cooling deli drawer that keeps meat a lot colder.

On the furniture side of things, Sutyla said there have been innovations in reclining sofas, which now come with conveniences you’d find in a new vehicle such as power headrests, power lumbar adjustment and power recline.

Smitty’s biggest brands are Canadian companies such as Palliser and Decor-Rest to “support as much Canadian product as possible” along with other brands such as Ashley.

The Black Friday sale runs from Wednesday, Nov. 22 to Saturday, Nov. 25. Store hours are Wednesday and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Existing customers should keep a close eye on their mailboxes for “early access” to the Black Friday sales event, said Sutyla.
