A longtime physician is earning accolades for his contributions throughout his medical career.
Dr. Anthony Anozie is this year’s recipient of Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s Physician Emeritus Award.
Physician colleagues and community members had the chance to nominate recently retired or reduced-practice physicians who have provided exemplary service and expertise to their community.
With more than 35 years of experience as a physician, Dr. Anozie has worked in the U.K., Australia and Canada with a general surgery specialization. Currently, he is based out of Easton Place Clinic, which earned an award from Selkirk Biz in 2023 for the best new business.
Dr. Peter Cho, surgical co-lead for IERHA, nominated Dr. Anozie to recognize his distinguished career dedicated to patient care, education and collegial leadership.
“Serving the community since 1997, Dr. Anozie has consistently demonstrated clinical excellence alongside a gentle and respectful demeanour,” Dr. Cho said in his nomination submission.
“He is deeply well regarded by colleagues, trainees and patients and has long fostered a culture of collaboration within the surgical community. His immense experience and knowledge have made him a trusted resource and mentor to many.”
Dr. Cho noted that Dr. Anozie has also trained and guided numerous general surgeons over the years and is widely respected as a thoughtful and effective teacher.
“His commitment to mentorship and teamwork has left a lasting impact on those who have worked with him and on the quality of care delivered within the community,” Dr. Cho said.
“Dr. Anozie’s career reflects the values of service, professionalism and mentorship that the Physician Emeritus Award seeks to recognize. He is most deserving of this honour.”
Dr. Anozie said he feels humbled and appreciative to be this year’s award recipient.
“Highlights of my career include practising all over the Interlake and up north as an itinerant surgeon. What I like best is meeting people and sometimes making them well,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the people of the Interlake for welcoming me into their community.”
Dr. Scott Gregoire, Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s vice-president of medical services and chief medical officer, expressed appreciation for Dr. Anozie’s contributions.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Anozie, predominately in my role as a radiologist, and his skill, professionalism and collegiality have always been exceptional,” Dr. Gregoire said.
“He is deeply respected by his colleagues and consistently brings a thoughtful, collaborative approach to patient care.”
Dr. Anozie received his award at Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s annual spring physician dinner on April 14 at the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.
