First launched in 2021 with support from a yard beautification competition grant from Communities in Bloom and Miracle-Gro, the contest has helped bring colourful blooms to the community each season. According to Fisher Branch chief administrative officer Kelly Marykuca, the Best Garden Competition has become an annual tradition that residents know and love.

“This competition is a great way to showcase our town,” she said. “It helps with beautification and demonstrates community pride.”

Residents living within the Local Urban District (LUD) of Fisher Branch are eligible to enter and are encouraged to design their gardens to reflect the yellow theme, although flowers of any colour are welcome. Residents and visitors will also notice yellow flower baskets hanging throughout the community.

Properties will be judged July 27 by LUD committee members Dave Plett, Allan Lindal, Tannis Chudy and Darcy Plett. Judges will be looking for yards that help make the town its most beautiful.

The top three properties will be announced on Facebook July 31. Winners will receive a gift card valued at $100, $50 or $25 to a local Fisher Branch business of their choice.

Those interested in entering are encouraged to call the municipal office at 204-372-6393 to ensure their property is not missed on judging day.

Marykuca added that judges will be looking for clean, well-maintained properties featuring trimmed trees and vibrant flowers that showcase natural beauty. Property owners do not need to be home during the evaluation, as judges will be touring the community and viewing properties from the street. However, personal garden tours can be arranged by contacting the municipal office.
