In other council news:

• RCMP Staff Sgt. Jason Vrooman provided council with a report during the May 1 council meeting. There were three break and enters in the first three months of 2024, but overall property crime is down. In April, there were no break and enters.

• Stonewall resident Ian Nicholson spoke to council about concerns with the town’s snow-clearing policy, including windrows and snow on sidewalks. He also noted that he had difficulty finding the snow-clearing policy on the town’s website. Mayor Sandra Smith said service delivery is a priority and that they would follow up with him.

• Tim Comack of Ventura Land Company spoke to council about the town’s SPRUCE (Stonewall Program for Rental Unit Construction and Expansion) policy. The town developed the policy in 2019 in response to the need for additional rental housing stock. The program provides incentives to encourage construction of multi-family rental housing developments.

• Council gave first reading to a bylaw to set tax rates for 2024 according to the financial plan.

• Council accepted a proposal from ft3 Architecture Landscape Interior Design for preliminary preparations and plans for the continuing care retirement community.

• Interested in learning more about Stonewall’s history? Members of the Stonewall Heritage Committee will host a free guided walking tour on Sunday, May 12 at 2 p.m. The tour starts at Memorial Park and will take about 90 minutes. Participants will have the chance to learn more about Alan McLeod, hear the story of the curfew bell and much more. Everyone who joins along should wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour will wrap up with refreshments.
