École Parkside School kicks off annual coupon book fundraiser

Date:

Altona residents will be happy to hear that École Parkside School is once again selling its popular coupon books, packed with deals from local businesses.

This annual fundraiser not only provides savings for the community but also helps fund important school projects that benefit students.

The $20 coupon book features 21 coupons for 12 area businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, salons, a pharmacy, a flower shop, a hotel, and even a car dealership.

“For that price, the coupon book pays for itself by using just a few of them,” said Parkside teacher Courtney Friesen. “And it’s local. It supports the local economy while helping the school at the same time.”

Last year, students raised an impressive $6,540 through coupon book sales, which helped support the school’s breakfast program and outdoor learning space development.

This year they are aiming to raise at least $6,000 to help fund new sports team jerseys, an emerging e-sports program, and continued improvements to the outdoor learning space.

“Each year, the Parent Advisory Council asks the school where they can best support the students through fundraising,” Friesen explained. “This year we are prioritizing new sports jerseys and contributions to the e-sports team. The current jerseys are well-used and outdated, and our new e-sports program requires some initial equipment upgrades.”

The students are excited to do their part in reaching this fundraising goal.

“I’m excited about the jerseys,” said Wynne Klassen. “They’re pretty old, and we really need new ones. I sold a bunch of coupon books last year, and I want to sell even more this year.”

Rhyla Hildebrand agreed, adding, “Our jerseys are like 100 years old. The coupon book is probably one of the best fundraisers our school does. My family definitely used them last year.”

Zandro Panday echoed their enthusiasm.

“I think it’s important for students to do things that support the school. I’m looking forward to seeing the new basketball jerseys.”

Friesen emphasized that while some of these students may only use the jerseys for a year or two or may not be around to see the completion of the outdoor learning space, they are still working hard to raise funds for them.

“I think that’s admirable,” she said. “They’re thinking of future students, as well.”

The outdoor learning space has been in development for a number of years, evolving in phases as funds and grants become available.

“Middle school students still need spaces to go and ways to play,” Friesen said. “We want to create something designed specifically for them.”

Students will be selling the coupon books door-to-door from March 3-21. Alternatively, residents can visit École Parkside School or call 204-324-8206 to get their hands on one.

“The funds raised through the coupon book take some pressure off the parent council to find funding for other needs in the school,” Friesen noted. “And the best part? The coupons are valid for an entire year, giving people plenty of time to take advantage of the deals.”
