Matchmaking and music make Miller musical a must-see

Date:

W.C. Miller Collegiate invites you to attend their upcoming drama: Emma! A Pop Musical.

Written by Eric Price, the play features Emma, a senior at Highbury Prep, who is certain she knows what’s best for her classmates’ love lives and is determined to find the perfect boyfriend for shy sophomore Harriet. But will Emma’s relentless matchmaking get in the way of finding her own happiness, and maybe even a potential love for herself?

Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, the musical features the hit songs of legendary girl groups and iconic female singers such as Whitney Houston, Shania Twain, and Katy Perry.

Elliot Rempel plays Jeff Knightley, a Highbury student and a substitute teacher.

“This character really hits close to home for me,” Rempel says. “I feel like I can play this role with confidence.”

Mackenzie Friesen says playing the role of Harriet has been a lot of fun.

“This role is very similar to my own personality. A bit shy, but also a bit dramatic and outgoing.”

Madison Gerbrandt plays Emma.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking but I’m excited. This is something new for me to try, and it’s been a good experience to step out of my comfort zone. We put a lot of work into it, but I think it’s going to turn out good.”

The role of Jane Fairfax is played by Ng’ani Mhango.

“My character is touring Highbury Prep for Fairfax Vending, her family company. She’s a rebellious character. It’s been interesting to play this role. This is my first lead role, so it’s stretching me a bit.”

Kenji Amurao plays Frankie Churchill, a world-famous pop star and former Highbury student.

“He’s a confident, almost arrogant star. Also, sometimes flirtatious. I’ve really enjoyed playing this role.”

English and drama teacher Sarah Gilbert and choir teacher Jody Friesen are co-producing and directing the musical.

“It’s been lovely. Especially because this musical is catered towards female empowerment,” Gilbert says. “It’s been really high energy during rehearsals. They’re singing songs they enjoy and know.”

Gilbert notes that this is W.C. Miller’s first post-COVID musical.

“The students were eager to be a part of it. We were able to find a spot for everybody who auditioned. With a cast of around 32 students from Grades 9-12, this musical is jam-packed with loads of fun singing and dancing—we’ve got spins, we’ve got twists, we’ve got dancing on tables – as well as a good, cringeworthy high school romance storyline.”

Gilbert adds that along with being lighthearted and fun, the show also offers an important message.

“There’s also an underlying theme about finding yourself and navigating relationships. It’s driving home the message of just be yourself, and people will like you. I think people will really enjoy it. It’s going to be great.”

Emma! A Pop Musical runs at the school Feb. 28 to March 2 at 7 p.m nightly.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids and can be booked by calling 204-324-6416.
