Carman Country Fair in need of support to continue running

Date:

The Carman Country Fair is one of Manitoba’s oldest running fairs. Established in 1879 and hosted by the Dufferin Agricultural Society Inc., it is seeking public support to keep it running for many more years.

As a member of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, it holds significant cultural and emotional value to the local community. It defines a sense of community that grows social capital and enhances the quality of life. The fair owes its success to the support of generous sponsors and countless volunteers who devote their time and energy to its organization.

The three-day event, starting on the second Thursday of July, offers a diverse range of activities and events, including 4-H and livestock shows, craft, flower, and baking competitions, trade show venues, and a lively midway. It allows community members to celebrate individual talents, forge new friendships, and enjoy the festivities.

In addition to showcasing rural life, the fair provides a platform for local businesses and entrepreneurs to promote their products and services. Visitors can browse and shop for unique and handcrafted items and engage in innovative, educational community and fundraising events that celebrate local heritage and support the festival’s initiatives.

The 4-H and livestock shows promote the value of hard work, dedication, and respect for the land and animals. They celebrate the region’s rich agricultural heritage and provide a platform for farmers and agricultural producers to showcase their products and contributions to the community. The craft, flower, and baking competitions draw participants from all over the region who compete for prizes and recognition.

Beyond the events and activities, the fair fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among volunteers and visitors alike. It’s a testament to Carman’s strong spirit and values and an opportunity to celebrate an important legacy while ensuring a sustainable future for the community and the planet. Please mark your calendars and join us for a fun, exciting, and celebration weekend at the Carman Country Fair.

Over the years, the Dufferin Agricultural Society (DAS) has worked tirelessly to keep the Carman Country Fair a cherished tradition for families. Now, they are calling on the public for your help to ensure its future and to save the fair.

Like many organizations, the DAS face increasing costs and financial challenges. For the past decade, they’ve used their reserves to cover shortfalls, but those funds are now depleted. They are now reaching out to the community to raise $200,000 to:

–          Pay outstanding debts from the 2024 Carman Country Fair

–          Support future events and sustain the Dufferin Agricultural Society

–          Complete critical repairs and upgrades to our facilities

–          A Tradition Worth Preserving

“The Carman Country Fair has been a cornerstone of the community for over 145 years, making it one of the longest-standing fairs in the region,” said Bernie Townsend, President of DAS. “While other fairs have closed their doors, we remain committed to providing this family tradition for generations to come. We also proudly support local community groups by offering our facilities for charity events, clinics, markets, and camps—equivalent to approximately $5,000 in annual donations to not-for-profits. Your contribution helps us continue these vital community partnerships.”

The DAS has qualified for a $90,000 matching grant from Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries under their Small Capital Program. These funds are designated for new accessibility bleachers on its grounds. However, they need to raise the matching funds to unlock this grant—an opportunity the fair cannot afford to miss.

DAC’s barns and facilities also need repairs to ensure the safety of spectators, exhibitors, and animals. Recent projects include $26,000 in 2023 for barn and arena repairs, installation of arena lighting and shade canopies, equine wash rack repairs, a new mobile announcer’s booth in 2024, and a new outdoor arena for livestock and equestrian events.

“Future funds will focus on critical structural and electrical repairs, allowing us to continue hosting events safely and effectively,” said Townsend.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Carman Country Fair plans to return to its agricultural roots by focusing on farming traditions and community engagement. To ensure financial stability, all future events will include sponsorships, and organizers are exploring ways to increase revenue through additional event rentals and fundraisers, including raffles, auctions, and socials.

That said, the DAS is calling on the residents of the Carman and Dufferin areas to join them in securing the future of the DAS and the Carman Country Fair.

‍Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt, while donors contributing $500 or more will be publicly recognized.

To donate, call 204-745-2226, email info@dufferinagsociety.com, or mail to Box 937, Carman, MB R0G 0J0. E-transfers can also be sent to info@dufferinagsociety.com. Visa/Mastercard payments are also accepted.

“Your generosity will help us preserve the legacy of the Carman Country Fair and continue serving the community for another 145 years. Together, we can keep this cherished tradition alive for future generations. Thank you for your consideration and support.”
