A traffic study is underway along 4th Avenue near the Dufferin Historical Museum to determine whether a crosswalk is needed in the area.
The Town of Carman submitted a request to Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) after receiving multiple inquiries from residents, according to chief administrative officer Susan Stein.
“They feel that it would be safer with the number of pedestrians that cross in that area and with the Boyne Lodge there,” said Stein.
She noted there have been no recent incidents involving pedestrians, but added that traffic and increased summer foot traffic have raised safety concerns.
The traffic study began June 17 and will continue until MTI has gathered sufficient data on vehicle and pedestrian volume at the intersection. There is no set completion date.
“The province has criteria for pedestrian and traffic counts that have to be met in order for a crosswalk to be installed,” Stein said.
Midland MLA Lauren Stone said MTI follows the Transportation Association of Canada’s guidelines to determine whether a crosswalk is warranted and what type should be installed. These criteria include traffic volume, pedestrian use, road design and speed limits.
Once the study concludes, the Town of Carman will be notified of the results and, if approved, a timeline for installation will be provided.
