Carman Wellness Connections (CWC) recently held a strategic planning weekend aimed at shaping the organization’s future and strengthening its impact in the community.
The session included input gathered through community surveys, internal reviews and brainstorming sessions. The result is a clear roadmap to help guide the group’s vision of empowering individuals and building a supportive, inclusive community.
Eighty people took part in the community survey, with 37.5 per cent of respondents saying they had previously participated in CWC programs. On average, participants rated their experience 4.49 out of 5.
“With the survey, we uncovered an important opportunity for growth in general awareness of CWC’s services, which was rated 3.09 out of 5,” said CWC co-ordinator Lisa Lehmann. “This indicates a need for greater outreach, so we can ensure more people know how to access the resources and support they need.”
The survey also asked participants to rank CWC’s six active working groups. Food security emerged as a top concern.
While rising food costs are a visible and immediate challenge, CWC notes that research shows stable, affordable housing is one of the most critical factors in reducing poverty. Housing stability is foundational to health, employment and overall quality of life.
“Our survey also revealed that a lack of awareness about available programs remains the largest barrier preventing community members from accessing wellness resources,” Lehmann said. “To overcome this, we’re committed to using both community feedback and research to enhance our outreach efforts. By improving communication and connecting individuals with the right support, we’re determined to break down these barriers and empower our community.”
Looking ahead, CWC is focused on reducing poverty, meeting community needs and fostering a sense of belonging through advocacy, program development and increased access to support services.
The organization has identified four strategic goals to guide its work in the coming years:
- Funding and revenue sustainability: Increase diversified revenue streams to support long-term operations.
- People and capacity: Build a strong volunteer base and fill key roles on the board and within working groups.
- Advocacy and awareness: Promote wellness and poverty reduction through storytelling and education.
- Programs: Ensure CWC delivers the right resources at the right time to support community well-being.
To help meet these goals, CWC is seeking passionate volunteers, especially those interested in joining the board of directors or contributing to working groups.
“Our organization is actively seeking individuals who are skilled in areas related to our strategic goals and who are eager to make a real, lasting difference,” said Lehmann. “Whether you’re passionate about social issues or simply want to give back, we invite you to be part of something truly impactful.”
CWC’s annual general meeting will take place June 11 at King’s Park, alongside its Community Supper. The event will include a free barbecue and an opportunity to connect with fellow community members.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about our progress and celebrate all the positive strides we’re making together,” said Lehmann. “Together, we can continue building a strong, supportive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
