Since 1885, Trish Aubin of the Dufferin Agricultural Society (DAS) said they have enthusiastically supported community involvement with livestock. This year DAS is looking at upgrades and are seeking community support through fundraising initiatives.
Whether it was wild bareback horse racing or a sheep show, the DAS has been invested in preserving the history of livestock at the Carman Country Fair and throughout various events held at our facility.
As time passed, the need for cattle and horse arenas became evident, leading to their construction on the agricultural society land for demonstrations, clinics and exhibitions.
Livestock continues to be an important component of the DAS and its commitment to the community by providing space for various events and activities throughout the year. 2024 is no exception. In June, the Rick Wiebe Memorial Barrel Race event was held at the DAS facilities, and each week in the summer, the grounds are used for the Denim and Dust Barrel Racing series. We hosted the Manitoba Simmental, 4-H and Open Cattle Show at the Carman Country Fair.
“This year, we were pleased to once again have an open light horse show with the Canadian Western Horse Association,” said Aubin.
DAS continues to host a Miniature Horse Show, the Manitoba Percheron Show, and the ever-favourite petting zoo.
“We, along with our community partners, Carman Communities in Bloom and the Carman Royal Canadian Legion No. 18, were fortunate to present the RCMP Musical Ride on Aug. 7 with the Manitoba Driving Society pre-show. The day was well-supported and successful,” she said.
This spring, the Board made the decision to improve and upgrade the existing cattle and light horse rings.
“It was built with the future in mind for hosting more cattle and equestrian events. It was built so that inner smaller rings can be constructed and moved as needed with the large perimeter fencing being stationary,” said Aubin.
DAS is fundraising to help with the purchase of the panels and the construction of the livestock arena. They are encouraging families and businesses to sponsor a panel for $500. These panels can be sponsored in the name of a family or business or memory of an individual. General donations for the construction and maintenance of the arena will also be accepted and recognized.
DAS will recognize all contributors by displaying names on the grounds. Donation forms are available on our website, Toews Printing, and at A New You (107 Main Street). A tax receipt will be issued for all donations.
