As the New Year begins, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the RM of Dufferin’s successes, challenges, and accomplishments from the past twelve months while also looking ahead to the opportunities and goals that 2025 will bring.
2024 has been a year of growth and progress for the municipality. One key achievement has been the continued enhancement of its infrastructure.
“We made significant strides in road improvements and maintenance, ensuring better connectivity and increased safety for all of our residents,” said Reeve Cor Lodder. “A major highlight was replacing a key bridge in the region, which has improved access and safety for residents and travellers. In addition, we completed important maintenance work on other bridges, ensuring their continued reliability and support for our transportation network. These efforts have not only improved the daily experience for individuals and families but have also benefited local businesses by enhancing accessibility and supporting our region’s continued growth.”
These infrastructure projects require considerable team effort, including planning, engineering, designing, pursuing permits and approvals, and securing contractors. The RM sincerely appreciates the collaborative efforts of many people involved.
“It all starts with a need, a conversation, that grows by engaging the various levels of government, engineering and contracting Firms,” said Lodder. “And it closes with a beautiful new bridge that keeps our infrastructure up to date and provides growth and long-term sustainability for the community.”
The RM has also seen positive opportunities as one of the member Municipalities that own and operate the Pembina Valley Water Co-op (PVWC). This organization is the essential heart of the RM’s potable water system.
“The dedicated, skilled, and professional team at PVWC works tirelessly to ensure that we can turn our taps on and enjoy a reliable, safe, and sure water supply for our daily needs. The PVWC has invested heavily in new and expanding infrastructure to ensure all this. We do tend to take it for granted, so raise a glass for the Water Co-op Team once in a while,” said Lodder.
While this year has seen many successes, Dufferin has also encountered a few challenges that tested its resilience. One of the key areas that they continue to focus on is water conservation.
In response to a drier-than-usual summer, the RM actively encouraged conservation efforts to ensure that its water resources were managed responsibly. Throughout this time, Lodder and his councillors maintained close communication with its agricultural community, always working together to support sustainable practices that help safeguard the land and resources.
“By fostering a spirit of collaboration, we can continue to adapt to changing conditions while ensuring that our farms, businesses, and residents remain strong and sustainable. Here also, we could see the close and confident cooperation between farming and the community. Stewardship of the land and environmental accountability is an essential mandate for each and every one of us,” said Lodder.
As we move into 2025, the RM of Dufferin Council will focus on securing the necessary resources and support for several key projects that will enhance the safety, accessibility, and well-being of its community.
The RM is in the process of applying for grants to support the major improvement of another key bridge and the replacement of a bridge that was removed some years ago. This is all to ensure the continued safety of pedestrians and the reliability of its transportation network. Additionally, the RM is seeking funding for the acquisition of a new fire truck, which will significantly enhance the capability of its emergency services to respond effectively and keep the community safe.
Beyond infrastructure, the RM is committed to exploring opportunities to improve cellular service in rural areas.
“This is an essential step to ensure that all residents and businesses have access to reliable communication and technology, which is increasingly vital for both daily life and economic growth. These efforts, along with the continued support of our residents, will help ensure that the RM of Dufferin remains a vibrant and prosperous place to live for years to come,” said Lodder.
The RM of Dufferin’s goal for 2025 is to build on the successes of this past year while addressing the challenges that they face. Lodder and his councillors will continue to prioritize sustainability, strong infrastructure, and a healthy environment. And will also aim to foster greater community engagement and ensure that all voices are heard as we plan for the future.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the residents of the RM of Dufferin for your ongoing commitment to our community,” said Lodder. “Your support, your involvement, and your willingness to work together to solve challenges make this a wonderful place to live. As we celebrate the holiday season, I hope you find time to relax and enjoy the company of loved ones. May the New Year bring health, happiness, and continued success to all of you.”
