Full-time mom, hairstylist and small-town supporter

Mother’s Day Feature

There’s something timeless and powerful about a mother’s love — quiet moments, warm hugs, endless support and tireless care. On Mother’s Day, we take time to honour the women who help shape our lives in countless ways, offering their strength, wisdom and compassion day after day. Whether it’s through guiding young hearts, cheering from the sidelines or simply being present, mothers make the world a better place — one loving moment at a time.

For Sue Brisson, being a mom and a hairstylist is a constant balancing act — but one she wouldn’t trade for anything.

At Birch and Honey Salon in Carman, Brisson juggles the demands of running a small business with the everyday joys of raising her young son, who often helps out by cleaning windows and tidying up the shop. She’s been cutting his hair since he was born — one of many ways their lives are intertwined.

“I’ve learned to be fully present wherever I am, whether that’s behind the chair or at home with my son,” she said.

Brisson said the flexibility of her work allows her to always be there when it counts.

Brisson compares motherhood to a rollercoaster — filled with unexpected moments, challenges and daily growth.

“The best part is watching your kid grow into themselves — figuring things out, doing something new that they couldn’t do the day before,” she said. “It’s wild how fast they change. You don’t even notice it until you stop and really look. I love seeing those little moments of growth — they sneak up on you.”

She said their life is busy and active, but those shared experiences help them grow together.

“I find myself doing things I never would’ve chosen — things that push me out of my comfort zone,” she said. “But you do them, because you love them.”

On Mother’s Day, Brisson enjoyed a quiet Sunday at home while her husband was out seeding — a chance to recharge and reflect.

Although her family doesn’t live on a farm, her son enjoys helping his dad from time to time.

“He loves riding in the tractor or walking through the pastures with our dog, Buff,” she said.

She said the day should be more than just a single moment of recognition, given the impact mothers have on people’s lives.

“Even if your mom isn’t close by this year, or if you’re missing a mother who’s no longer with us — I see you,” she said. “Moms are some of the most important people in the world. Let’s hold space for all of them — here, far away, or gone too soon.”

When she’s not with her son, Brisson is behind the chair at Birch and Honey. She said working in a small town like Carman fosters a unique sense of connection that’s often missing in larger centres.

“I can walk or bike just about anywhere,” she said. “I pop over to Evensong on my break if I need a quick gift, then swing by Carman Floristas for a latte. About 98 per cent of my wardrobe is from Knockabouts, and at the end of the day, I can get my car washed at Hometown Car Wash.”

She said she’s grateful to feel supported by fellow local business owners, calling Carman a place that truly feels like home.

Brisson also believes in building trust and mutual respect with both clients and peers. If a service isn’t her specialty, she’s happy to refer someone to another local stylist.

“If there’s something I don’t specialize in or isn’t my strength, I have no problem recommending a client to my neighbour down the road,” she said. “There’s enough room for all of us, and I think that kind of respect and community mindset is what makes this place so special.”

Looking ahead, Brisson hopes to expand Birch and Honey’s offerings. The salon has space available for rent, and she’s open to adding a massage therapist or another complementary service.

“It’s a wonderful, supportive environment to work in,” she said. “That kind of community makes a huge difference when you’re running a small business — and it means even more when it’s built on real relationships.”
