Roland Fire Department’s Derek Unrau recently received his 10-year firefighting pin for his years of service, in addition to the 2023 Roland Firefighter of the Year Award.
Unrau says that the ten years he’s been helping out at the Roland Fire Department have flown by.
“I’ve always had an interest in the fire service, and it’s a great way to give back to your community,” said Unrau. “The most memorable moments for me here over the years are just being able to work with the current and past members of this department.”
Unrau was very appreciative of recently receiving recognition for his years of service with the Roland Fire Department.
“I really appreciate the recognition of the ten years and the Firefighter of the Year Award, but without a great crew to work with, it wouldn’t be possible,” said Unrau. “This amazing group of firefighters we have is what makes this fire department, and they should all be recognized for their service.”
Unrau notes that the Roland Fire Department is doing well in 2024 despite some key members retiring.
“We just had a few members retire after having a long career on the Roland Fire Department in Murray Peirson, Kevin Brown, and Evan Vermette, who all recently retired and left some big shoes to fill. So currently, we are at 16 members, which is a little low, but we have some new members training that will be great firefighters.”
Now might be the perfect time if you’ve ever considered becoming a firefighter. The Roland Fire Department is seeking new members to join their dedicated team. Reach out to a current member for more information and take the first step toward making a difference in your community.
“It’s a great job with amazing people and a good way to give back to the community.”
