On March 20, the Rural Municipality (RM) of Grey will hold a by-election to fill the Ward 2 councillor position, which was previously held by Ian Woods from 2022 to 2024. The two candidates running for the position are Bert Van Der Steen and Brandi Martin.
Van Der Steen lives on his family farm northwest of Elm Creek with his wife, Dusty, and their son, Layne. He has been a part of the community since his family moved to the area in 1991.
“Since that time, I have been heavily involved in agriculture within the community on both a personal as well as a professional level,” said Bert Van Der Steen.
After graduating from the University of Manitoba in 2003, Van Der Steen began working in the corporate agricultural industry, focusing on project management, safety, and personnel management. He is currently a Field Development Representative for an international agricultural science company, where he manages field projects and collaborates with customers across the prairie provinces.
As a former Deputy Chief of the Elm Creek fire station, Van Der Steen has always been passionate about helping and supporting the community, which motivated him to participate in this by-election.
“I see this as an opportunity to continue to support the community while also representing all those that work and live in our area.”
If elected, Van Der Steen aims to represent not only the constituents of Ward 2 but the entire municipality by providing a fair and unbiased voice for all residents and workers within the community.
“I want to see safety and accountability given to all residents and members who work and live in the community. I hope to bring transparency and understanding to the municipal process and provide insight into what the future goals and hopes are, for growing and strengthening the community.”
Residents are encouraged to email Van Der Steen at bert.e.vandersteen@gmail.com or call 204-436-2616 if they would like to discuss issues or arrange a meet-and-greet before the election polls open.
Advance voting will take place at the RM of Grey municipal office in Elm Creek on March 12, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting day is set for March 20 at the Elm Creek Community Hall, also from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
