Where are they now? Catching up with Jackie “McInnes” Hritzuk

Date:

This feature will attempt to renew some acquaintances with those who called Carman and area home at one time or another. I have randomly selected people to answer questions of their past and present so the readers can be brought up to speed on their lives.

Q. Firstly, let’s get familiar with you again. When did you live in Carman?

I lived in the Carman area from birth to 1973. The first six years of my life was spent in the St. Daniel district until our family moved east of Carman in 1962.

Q. Did you attend school here?

I attended St. Daniel school to grade 1 then Carman Elementary and Carman Collegiate, graduating in 1973.

Q. What did you do for jobs as a student?

During high school I worked as a candy striper at the Carman Hospital and later as a server at the Fireside Inn.

Q. What activities did you participate in as a student?

I volunteered with the Fashion Club, Student Council, and did some cheerleading for the Carman Cougars hockey team.

Q. Who and what did your parents do for a living?

My parents were farmers.  After retiring from the farm, my mom worked at McEachern’s potato business and Aubin Nurseries for a few years.

Q. What was your chosen career after school?

After graduation I moved to Winnipeg where I obtained employment with an engineering and plumbing supply company. After deciding I wasn’t going to attend university or college, a work colleague and I moved to Calgary, as I had accepted a transfer with this company.

Q. What activities did you participate in while working there?

I continued curling in a Business Girls league in Winnipeg.  I also participated in fun ball tournaments through work.

Q. Did you meet your spouse here or where?

It was while living in Calgary that I met my husband to be, Wally Hritzuk. I eventually moved to Prince George where Wally lived.  We were married in June 1980 in Carman. We eventually left Prince George and eventually settled in Flin Flon after a brief stop in Alberta.

Q. Did you raise any children here or where?  Names, where now and doing what?

We’ve raised two children, Lindsey, who works for the University of Calgary and Brian who works for Superior Propane.  No grandchildren.

Q. What do you do now? Retired?

I retired from working in a school for the Flin Flon School Division in 2016, however, I still do some casual work for them.

Q. What passes your leisure time? Hobbies? Sports?

For many years, I was an avid curler and now enjoy going to the Briers occasionally and watching my favorite teams on television. I have also been involved as a volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada for about 35 years, having received a Medal of Merit award and the Manitoba Red River Cart award.  I have also volunteered with many other organizations that I have belonged to, or my children were in.

Q. Have you travelled for leisure and where?

My husband and I spent a few years as “Canadian Snowbirds” in Osoyoos B.C. before the pandemic came.  Most of our other travelling has been in Canada and the U.S.A.

Q. Any future plans? Do you have to do list?

I don’t have any concrete plans for the future so do not have a specific to do list.

Q. Do you ever return to Carman?

I usually return to Carman/Winnipeg about three times per year as I have two sisters in Winnipeg, and one sister and three brothers in Carman or surrounding area as well as many nieces and nephews.

Q. What are some of your fondest memories of your Carman days?

Most of my memories of Carman are very favorable.  It is still “home” to me.  I remember hanging out in the Rex Café with friends or just cruising around town.  You can’t forget the ice cream cones at Syl’s in the summer!
