Alf Cuthbert School celebrates 55 years with May 27 event

Date:

Alf Cuthbert School will celebrate the 55th anniversary of the naming of the school on May 27.

The school, named after Alfred Otto “Alf” Cuthbert (1913–1970), was renamed in November 1970 following an addition to the building.

Celebrations begin at 11 a.m. with school tours, followed by a light lunch and slideshow presentation, a special program at 1 p.m. and wrapping up around 2 p.m.

Past students, staff, families and community members are welcome to attend, and special guests are expected.

For organizers Alann Fraser and June Gagaluk, the milestone offers a chance to reflect on the past, present and future.

Alf Cuthbert served 28 years on the Moosehorn School Board and was heavily involved in many other community organizations. As manager of the Moosehorn and Ashern creameries, he helped bring electricity to the town.

Organizers said he remains a strong role model for students, noting his work ethic and willingness to help others — qualities they hope will continue to be instilled in future generations.

“Alf Cuthbert School is dedicated to supporting students and families in developing community-orientated young people, reflecting many of the attributes that Alf Cuthbert demonstrated,” they wrote in an email. “We want Alf Cuthbert School to continue to give young people opportunities to grow into community-minded individuals who are kind, respectful and supportive of everyone and their physical space. We want students, staff and the community to feel that their school is a place of community, safety, integrity and high-level learning.”

The anniversary event is free to attend. Guests are asked to RSVP by calling the school at 204-768-2396 by May 15 to ensure adequate food.

Organizers are also requesting old school photos be emailed to frasera@lakeshoresd.mb.ca or dropped off at the school office by May 8 to be included in the slideshow.
