Celebrating 24 Years of the Gimli International Film Festival

Date:

Looking for something to do this summer?

From July 24 to 28, visit Gimli and enjoy an array of local, national, and international films, including narrative feature films, documentaries, and shorts at the Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF).

“Now more than ever, it’s crucial to support the arts, as many film institutions across Canada are facing challenges. We are truly on the verge of making Manitoba the epicentre of film for all of Canada. GIFF is a gem amongst Canadian festivals, and we’re fortunate to have it here. Let’s celebrate films together! I hope to see everyone at the festival,” said Teya Zuzek, this year’s Executive Director of GIFF.

This will be Zuzek’s first time directing the international festival.

“I still have to pinch myself; I can’t believe I’m leading such a phenomenal cultural institution. What excites me most is seeing my first GIFF come into fruition and celebrating this achievement with my incredible staff, Board, and programmers,” she said.

This year, GIFF explores the concept of family, community, and connectedness—all things that have naturally emerged throughout its program of films and poster design.

“We’re so lucky to have incredible programmers every year.”

New to GIFF this year is their GIFF Global Industry Summit. It’s a free event this year and open to the public – pre-registration is encouraged. It’s a great way for individuals to hear about what is happening across the film sector and engage with established professionals from different areas.

Annual events like the RBC $10,000 Emerging Filmmakers Pitch Competition, 48 Hour Challenge Screening, and Winnipeg Indigenous Filmmakers Collective Screening are also coming back. GIFF’s  Awards Ceremony this year will be extra special, with Zacharias Kunuk receiving the Alda Award.

Zuzek is especially looking forward to a special screening of Wilderness Trails, a Manitoban film that hasn’t been screened since the 1970s. The screening will open with a unique sound performance by a Winnipeg-based artist.

Returning this year are the famous RBC Sunset Beach Screenings, which will take place each night. Enjoy a unique experience under the stars at the beach, and take in one or more of this year’s beach films: Barbie (2023), Summer Rental (1985), Thelma & Louise (1991), Theater Camp (2023), Paddington 2 (2017).

“After the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s heartening to see people talking about reconnecting,” said Zuzek.

This year, attendees can look forward to an exceptional program that  has something for everyone.
