Evergreen Festival of the Arts holding upcoming competition

Date:

The Evergreen Festival of the Arts is getting set to launch its annual performing arts competition that gives students and youth living in the Evergreen School Division catchment area an opportunity to hone their performing talents.

The three-week performance competition will be held in Gimli, Riverton and Arborg.

The festival sees a diverse range of student talent in performance arts such as solo and group singing, piano and other instruments, speech, dancing and Orff, which combines music, movement, speech and drama. The festival provides performers with an opportunity to compete and receive feedback from judges on how to further develop their skills.

Festival president Krystal Isfeld, who is a music specialist, literacy support teacher and assistant principal at Sigurbjorg Stefansson Early School, and her committee oversee every aspect of the festival, from venue and volunteer coordination, liaising with community sponsors, preparing the program and bringing in the adjudicators.

The adjudicators for this year’s festival are Barbara Cornish (piano); Laurie Hoogstraten (speech); Meaghan Funk (dance); Jewel Casselman (Orff); Barbara Hamilton (vocal/choral); and Ryan Werle (instrumental).

The festival will run from April 11 – May 7. The schedule is as follows: Instrumental April 11 in Gimli; Orff April 15 in Gimli; Piano April 16-17 in Gimli; Dance April 22 in Arborg; Speech April 25-26 in Riverton; Vocal/Choral April 30-May 1 in Gimli; and Trophy Class May 1 in Gimli.

A Hi-Lites concert is scheduled for May 7 in Gimli. The concert includes the presentation of a variety of scholarships.
