Gimli organizations are in the running this year for a tourism award after Travel Manitoba and Winnipeg Tourism announced a list of nominees and finalists.
Among the finalists are the Gimli International Film Festival, the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba and Interlake Brewing Co.
The 3rd annual Tourism Awards recognizes tourism professionals and organizations from Winnipeg and from Manitoba that have made an outstanding contribution to the industry over the course of 2024.
There are nine award categories that include Employee of the Year, Business of the Year (large and small), Indigenous Tourism, Innovator of the Year Award, Social Impact Award and Volunteer of the Year Award.
The Gimli International Film Festival is up for an Event of the Year Award, which recognizes substantial economic impact in a local community and the ability to attract visitors and create an outstanding experience.
“We couldn’t be more excited,” said the festival in a post. “It takes a village to put on a festival, and whether we win or lose, we’d like to thank the 2024 GIFF team for an incredible season.”
The Ghost Tours at Lower Fort Garry is also nominated for Event of the Year.
The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba is up for a Marketing Campaign of the Year Award for its Century of Fjallkona, the theme of its 2024 festival. Since 1924, the festival has chosen a maid of the mountain (Iceland personified) each year to preside over its festival. The marketing award honours an individual or organization for creative or innovative marketing campaigns that increase visitor numbers and revenues.
And Interlake Brewing, a family-run restaurant and micro-brewery, is a finalist for a Business of the Year (Large) Award, which recognizes a tourism business, facility or attraction with 20 or more employees and which provides exceptional visitor experiences.
Dr. Carolyn Weiss of Friends of Lower Ft Garry, is nominated for the Volunteer of the Year award.
Winners will be announced at the 3rd Annual Tourism Awards presentation on April 10 at the Fort Garry Hotel.
