Local students to receiver exergaming room thanks to $25,000 grant

Date:

Students at Dr. George Johnson Middle School will soon have a new space to play, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Access Credit Union’s Focused Funding program.

Principal Nicole Young said the new exergaming room and program will make a big difference for middle years students, providing additional opportunities for inclusive, engaging and accessible physical activity options.

“Receiving this grant is a fantastic opportunity for our school,” she said. “It will provide the opportunity to promote healthy, active lifestyles and allow for an innovative way to engage students in physical education, regardless of their ability or interests.”

She explained exergaming combines technology with movement, marking a new and exciting alternative to traditional physical activities. She said it encourages social interaction and teamwork as students collaborate, compete and celebrate together and she hopes the program will have an impact on students who may not participating in phys-ed classes.

“It offers an exciting and inclusive way to help students stay active, build fitness skills and enjoy physical activity in a modern, motivating environment,” she added. “By integrating movement with technology, we are meeting students where they are and turning something they love, gaming, into a positive, health-focused experience.”

No timeline is currently set for the addition.

Access Credit Union awarded a total of $250,000 to 10 public schools across Manitoba this year to support projects that promote student wellness and nutrition. Each school received $25,000 for initiatives ranging from nutrition programs to upgrades that encourage physical activity.

“Access Credit Union is proud to partner with local schools across the province and the strong response from schools reflects how much these partnerships matter,” said Curt Letkeman, board chair of Access Credit Union. “We’re especially encouraged to see participation from all regions, reinforcing the meaningful impact of the Focused Funding Grant in bringing communities together.”

Other 2026 Focused Funding Grant recipients include Dugald School, Ecole Neil Campbell, Ecole Powerview School, Ecole Tache, Lowe Farm School, Niverville High School, Parc La Salle, Schevchenko School and Starbuck School.

Young said she is extremely grateful for Access Credit Union’s support.

“Their support will make it possible for us to bring an exciting and innovative exergaming program to our students,” she added. “We are incredibly grateful for their investment in the health, well-being and future success of our learners.”

Access Credit Union will announce details for the 2027 Focused Funding Grant early next year. Each year’s focus and eligibility criteria are designed to address evolving community priorities.
