Calling all young gift-givers! The Matlock Recreation Club is holding a Christmas Shopping Spree event exclusively for children.
On Nov. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m., adults are invited to sit back and relax at Matlock Rec Centre’s canteen while the young ones do some Christmas shopping.
“We thought it would be really fun if we could offer a kid’s Christmas shopping day,” said Matlock Recreation Coordinator Crystal Thordarson.
Matlock’s Kids Christmas Shopping Spree will feature 18 vendors with items for sale for under $10.
“There’s a wide variety of items being sold,” noted Thordarson. “There is a little bit of something for everyone.”
This sale is unique, as many of the vendors will be children themselves. “We wanted to open up the vendor tables to children as well so that we could give them an opportunity to learn about being an entrepreneur and earning money.”
The shopping spree will be set up like a craft sale, with kids visiting different vendors at their tables to shop.
“We will have volunteers ready at the do to help a child do their Christmas shopping so their gifts can remain a secret,” Thordarson added.
Tucker (8) and Kenna (6) Kater are a sibling duo who will be selling their handmade goods at the Kids Christmas Shopping Spree. The two young entrepreneurs have spent many evenings making their items at their Fraserwood home.
“We have been making wallets, coin purses, keychains, zipper pulls, hair gel, bracelets, and necklaces,” said Tucker.
“I make hair gel, scrunchies and bracelets,” added Kenna.
Tucker has been working hard stringing beads for his goods, and Kenna has the recipe down for her hair gel. “I take glitter and the gel, and then we mix it all together. Then we put them in little tiny containers.”
“They (Tucker and Kenna) have been making a lot of their things together as a team,” added their Mom, Natasha Kater.
Tucker and Kenna are still deciding how they will use the money they earn from the shopping spree, but they are both very excited and a little nervous about selling their items.
You can find Tucker and Kenna’s handmade items at their table, Kater Kreations. Their name comes from wanting to include everyone in their family.
“Our oldest son was offering to help make some of the products, and they wanted the name to include all three of them,” explained Natasha Kater. She added that Tucker and Kenna thought the “K” in Kreations made the name unique and encourages readers to bring their kids.
Whether your little ones are shopping for you, their teacher, pet or coach; the Kids Christmas Shopping Spree will have an affordable gift for everyone on their shopping list.
Thordarson said that once the gift shopping is complete, visit the free gift-wrapping station before heading home for the day.
Volunteers will be set up at the Matlock Rec Centre to help the young shoppers package their gifts so they can still remain a surprise until the special day.
There will also be a free craft table run by Matlock Rec Centre board members if the kids want to gift something handmade by themselves.
“We are able to run an event like this because we have really great volunteers and board members who help out at the club,” said Thordarson.
The Matlock Recreation Centre is always looking for more volunteers to help with their events. If you are interested in helping out at Nov. 30s Kids Christmas Shopping Spree or at any future event, please contact Thordarson directly at (204) 798-6276.
