As the school year ends and summer begins, the graduating class of 2024 at Riverton Collegiate is not only saying farewell and cleaning out their lockers but also experiencing a new kind of freedom.
Amidst the June heat, a group of 13 students made their way across the stage erected in the high school gym. Donning stylish blue robes and personalized graduation caps, they had every reason to feel accomplished as they reflected on their journey through education and the cherished moments they had shared. With unique aspirations for their future endeavors, these students celebrated with friends and family beside them.
During her speech, Kristine Dubois, guest speaker and teacher, recognized both the remarkable achievements and enjoyable experiences of the students during their four years at the school. Like many graduating classes of 2024, this group embarked on their high school journey by navigating academic challenges and adapting to pandemic regulations. However, they did not face these trials alone; the students tackled them alongside their dedicated teachers and persevered as a team.
“Navigating this experience taught us empathy, respect, collaboration, creativity, and responsibility,” said Dubois.
Unlike most other schools, this class’s small size provided the students with experiences that only close-knit communities like theirs can have. During the ceremony, they were reminded of times they shared meals together, won sports games together, travelled to new and exciting places together, and faced the challenges of reading Shakespeare and overcoming stage fright in class.
In their speech, Valedictorians Caelan Cormack and Trent Toderan expressed gratitude to their peers, educators, and loved ones for their unwavering support throughout their journey.
“We would like to thank everyone who has helped us along this journey and helped to mould us into the people we are today,” they said.
“We’re all moving onto bigger and better things,” said the Valedictorians, acknowledging the possibilities that the future might hold for each of their peers. Some will attend a post-secondary program at university or college, some will carry forward their family business, some have plans to enter the workforce right away, and others plan to go where life takes them.
“We wish everyone here good luck on their journeys, wherever it takes you, and we know that we are all going to succeed in our own ways.”
During her speech, Dubois made sure to acknowledge something unique that she admires in each of the graduates. This ranged from their compassionate behavior towards peers and their interests beyond academics, to the meaningful experiences they had while learning. Some were commended for their strong work ethic, natural abilities as leaders, or determination during difficult times.
As the graduates listened intently in the school gym, Dubois delivered a powerful message: “Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Hold your head high and walk confidently in the direction of your dreams. Be careful with your words, because although you may be able to repair, others can never unhear the message. Celebrate your success, reflect often, cherish time with family and friends and always know you are welcome at your Riverton Collegiate Institute home.”
Numerous bursaries and scholarships were presented to graduates, encompassing both local awards such as memorial funds, and university-based scholarships. Notably, Caelan Cormack, a graduate and co-valedictorian, was the deserving recipient of both the Governor General’s Academic Medal and the Chown Centennial Scholarship.
The Governor General’s Academic Medal recognizes the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest overall average in Grade 11 and 12.
The Chown Centennial Scholarship is awarded to the best all-around graduating student, must be attending the University of Manitoba in the fall and have a minimum of 85 per cent average.
With congratulations and cheers echoing throughout the room, the Riverton Collegiate class of 2024 made their way outdoors to take photos with friends and family and continue celebrating their great achievements.
