Calling all poutine coinoisseurs — it’s the week you’ve been waiting for!
La Poutine Week runs from Feb. 1 to 7 across Canada, with several entries right here in the Interlake.
To participate, restaurants across the country can create a one-of-a-kind poutine, and diners can vote for their favourite at lapoutineweek.com. The website also features a voting leaderboard that showcases the Top 5 restaurants in real time.
At Kahleigh’s Brew Barn, located at 40 Main St. in Riverton, they’re serving up a creation called “Brew Burger Poutine.”
“This year we decided to do a deconstructed Brew Barn burger — fries topped with cheddar cheese, gravy, bacon crumble, ground beef, tomato, pickles, lettuce and our house made burg’ sauce,” said owner Kahleigh Dubois.
“We wanted to do something this year that wasn’t spicy so it would appeal to more customers — and when it comes down to it, burgers are the most popular items on our menu. We source our beef from a local farm by Arborg called Bar Z Beef.”
The local eatery has participated in La Poutine Week for several years.
“We look forward to coming up with new ideas and meeting all the new customers who come out to try our latest creation,” Dubois said.
“Our Brew Burger Poutine will be available to order on our website starting Feb 1.”
Kahleigh’s Brew Barn is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Visit www.kahleighsbrewbarn.ca to learn more about the Riverton restaurant.
At Shenanigans on the Beach, located at 46 Main St. in Winnipeg Beach, they’ll be cooking up a creation called “Shenanigan’s Philly Cheese Frings Poutine.”
This entry features a mixture of hand-cut double-fried Interlake potato fries and crispy onion rings, topped with slow-roasted Grade A beef, sautéed bell peppers and a blend of Saputo mozzarella and St. Albert cheese curds. To top it off, everything is covered in Montreal-seasoned gravy and sprinkled with freshly sliced green onions.
“It is very good. We had to do a lot of taste-testing,” said Shannon King, one of the co-owners of the restaurant. ““This is actually our first year doing it. I figured it would be a good way to come out and try something different.”
At Lakeview Hotel and Resorts, located at 10 Centre St. in Gimli, the mouth-watering entry is called “Lobster Poutine.” This tasty dish features diced lobster tail, sautéed grape tomatoes and green onions smothered in lobster bisque and house three-cheese blend.
