Woodburning artist explores intricate designs on natural medium

Date:

Local Roland artist Janessa Davis offers custom woodworking, woodburning and painting services for signs, gifts and decorations.

Davis has always enjoyed expressing her creativity through art. In January of 2018, she was walking through the craft aisle of Walmart and saw a woodburning kit and thought she would give it a try.

“I was hooked right away,” said Janessa Davis. “I started with simple welcome signs and birthday calendars and attempted some scenery and wildlife, and then started posting some of my art on social media. My friends and family are so supportive of my art and always encourage me to try new things.”

Once Davis got used to different woodburning tips and the feel for how soft woods burn versus harder wood types, as well as how to find the right heat settings for each, she started to build signs and boxes and much more.

Most recently, she created an intricate build and burn for a Roland Fire Department worker Kevin Brown, who is retiring at the end of this year.

“I had made a sign for a retiring Roland Fire Department member, John Hughes, a few years ago and was honoured to be asked to make another one,” Davis said.

Davis typically spends several hours on some of her larger scenic pieces, spreading the time out over a couple of days when she find the opportunity.

“My favorite pieces are unique and hand drawn. I have made quite a few custom pieces since I started, but I can only take on a couple of projects at a time as my husband and I have our hands full with our wonderful four kids and our jobs.”

Davis’ work can be found on her Facebook page @janessa.woodburning. Message her on Facebook or email jnjwanders@gmail.com about custom orders.

“I enjoy creating beautiful art as well as humorous art, and I hope to spark a creative curiosity in others. I’ll be continuing my projects and looking forward to taking on more unique requests in the new year.”
