Don’t miss out on the Nov. 18 performance
The long-standing pre-pandemic tradition of the Interlake Choral Association Advent Concert is back! They have renamed, rescheduled, and partnered with Holiday Alley; but this event still promotes the choral arts and choirs sharing their music in the region. This year the event will take place on Nov. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Selkirk United Church.
“The holiday season is always a celebration of togetherness and this concert allows choirs to share with each other and with the greater community,” said concert organizer Kendra Obach.
This multi-choir concert has been going on since the late 1990s. It changed forms due to the pandemic; but, the association is finally ready to be back in person this year. Choirs including Octavia, the Back Pew Boys, Quarry Choristers and Meliora are set to take the stage.
“Holiday Alley is a special event because it provides a stage for local artists and community members to perform and bring their own ideas to life. Partnering with the Interlake Choral Association is just the kind of work we want to do — feature amazing talent in the community and uplift their existing initiatives by including them in our festival’s program,” said Holiday Alley Festival Producer Jennie O’Keefe.
Group singing has long been known to forge social bonds and bring community together, but did you know that it’s also good for your health and happiness? Research at the University of Oxford shows that singing boosts endorphins, decreases stress hormones, and decreases muscle tension.
Music and singing are found in human cultures across the world, and we can see why — it’s healing, nourishing, and brings people together. Just ask Dr. Anthony Anozie of Easton Place Clinic in Selkirk. A new sponsor for Holiday Alley this year promoting, Music is Medicine, Dr. Anozie’s sponsorship helps support pop-up caroling throughout Holiday Alley’s program all along Manitoba Avenue.
Holiday Alley is inviting everyone to welcome winter, boost your health and happiness, and delight in singing carols from the classic to the contemporary this November. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. with a suggested donation of $10. There is limited seating of 200. All profits will be used to support local choral workshops and Holiday Alley events. Donations will be collected at the door or can be sent by etransfer to iychoir@gmail.com
