Third annual event supporting all people who’ve experienced cancer
Cancer is something that many people in our community have experienced or have a friend or loved one who’s experienced. Selkirk Home Hardware Building Centre supports many fundraising initiatives in our community and three years ago they decided they wanted to collaborate with the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation by creating the Fighting Cancer of All Colours Fundraiser.
“We named it Fighting Cancer of All Colours because we didn’t want to just specify breast cancer or colon cancer, we wanted to represent all the different types of cancers,” said Wendy Meger, general manager of Selkirk Home Hardware Building Centre.
Residents can participate in this fundraiser in many different ways. Donations at Home Hardware in Selkirk are a great way to start. Any donation will have the recipient receive a ribbon or a plant-able cancer dollar. If you’d like to enter the business’s raffle for a conversation set, a donation of only a toonie will get you there, though you can always donate more. There are also tank tops, t-shirts, or lanyards available to purchase in-store which, of course, the proceeds from the sales of benefit the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. For those who’d prefer to donate online, they can check out the event’s website, and, finally, there will be an in-person event on May 11 at Home Hardware where people can come together and give.
“[On May 11,] we’re going to have Tip Top Dogs selling [lunch]. They are a local hotdog cart that has been partnering with us since last year and we’re going to also have a table set up selling the different merchandise and accepting donations,” said Meger.
Every meal sold by Tip Top Dogs will see a $1 donation go to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
This event came about because of so many people’s lives being touched by cancers of all types.
“Over the years, we’ve had several employees who have experienced different types of cancers, and we’ve actually lost a few of our staff members. I’ve been here 28 years and it wasn’t just one specific type of cancer [that’s affected people. Krystal Laferriere] who is helping organize this event also lost a family member to breast cancer. So, it’s important that we help support all types of cancers because we’ve all been touched by it one way or another and we didn’t want to just bring awareness to one type,” explained Meger.
Hosting a fundraising event like this, as well as contributing to our community, is something that staff at Home Hardware take pride in and do often. In addition to the annual Fighting Cancer of All Colours event, they supply materials for school projects, are involved in Communities in Bloom projects, as well as Tree Canada tree planting initiatives, and their newest endeavour is their annual Gifts from Angels holiday event which provides Christmas gifts to residents of local care homes.
“As someone deeply involved in several different charities and organizations that support worthwhile causes, I understand the importance of collaboration and support within our community. It is through collective efforts and partnerships that we can truly make a difference in the lives of those in need,” said Meger.
She welcomes residents to come to Home Hardware to make donations and to stop by the outside event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 11 to support the Fighting Cancer of All Colours Fundraiser.
“Every contribution, regardless of size, is crucial as we strive to stay ahead of these diseases. Selkirk Home Hardware Building Centre remains dedicated to the Fighting Cancer of All Colors initiative. Each member of our team has been touched by cancer in some way, and we are committed to making a meaningful difference to this very worthwhile cause,” said Meger.
She also wants to thank everyone who makes the effort to contribute to the Fighting Cancer of All Colours Fundraiser.
