Argyle Day to feature cabin dedication, museum tours

Date:

It’s time to celebrate in the community of Argyle!

All are welcome to enjoy the festivities for Argyle Day on Saturday, June 7.

Shayne Campbell, president and executive director of Settlers, Rails and Trails, explained that Argyle Day was chosen as a community celebration day to be marked each year on the first Saturday of June.

“It is important to our community as we get a chance to gather in the nice late spring weather and share our talents, history and culture. In the past, Argyle Day has seen entertainment by local bands and singers. We have presented important awards to community members and dedicated a beautiful electronic message board sign,” he said.

“Our museum Settlers, Rails & Trails opens our exhibits and Heritage Park to the public, sharing the history and culture with our visitors. Last year, we raised the brand new Argyle Village flag for the first time too.”

On June 7, the fun for Argyle Day begins at 9 a.m. with a community garage sale around the village.

Then at 10 a.m., the Settlers, Rails and Trails Museum park will open. At 11 a.m., the museum’s newly constructed log cabin will be dedicated to well-known community member Charlie Amy.

“Born and raised on his family’s farm north of Argyle, Charlie has been an active volunteer and community leader for decades. He was also instrumental in providing a location for the 2000 television series Pioneer Quest,” Campbell said.

“The cabin has been constructed to resemble the first homes of early European settlers who arrived in the Argyle area in the mid 1870s to 1900s. Charlie will officially open the cabin by turning the skeleton key in the front door.”

At noon, the Argyle Village flag will be raised at Brant-Argyle School, followed by historic school tours from noon to 4 p.m.

Also from noon to 4 p.m., Settlers, Rails and Trails will offer free admission to its Manitoba Brick and Block exhibit at the Argyle Community Centre. This is the last day the brick exhibit will be open to the public before a new exhibit starts in July.

“On July 5 from 1 to 4 p.m., the museum exhibition space unveils our newest display: Treasures from The Vault. This is a selection of unique, never before exhibited artifacts chosen by the museum’s directors,” Campbell said.

“There will also be a brand new Timeline Exhibition featuring telephone communication in Manitoba.”

Looking ahead, work will continue throughout the summer months to further improve the museum and its grounds.

“The museum volunteers will be spending the summer working towards ongoing projects at the Heritage Park, with an annual Open House on Sept. 6 to show the public our efforts,” Campbell said.
